We annotated an article on parenting mistakes.
Then we researched more on parenting styles. Today we took notes while listening to the Letters section of the novel. Then we wrote a letter to our 11 year old selves. (attached below) The rest of time was spent working on getting caught up and working on the book projects. See the book projects' tab above for more info.
We got the instructions for our big parenting-Frankenstein paper. (attached below) It is not due for awhile. Just do 2 pages of research on parenting styles. We had the whole period to research parenting styles.
We found and read 5 Romanticism era poems and then drew a topic out of a hat and wrote our own Romanticism era poem about the topic we chose. Then we learned about Gothic fiction and its ties to science fiction. We ended with a journal response called "What If?" (attached below).
Today we watched some videos on what it means for something to be Gothic. Then we stared writing a rejection letter. (attached below) Just choose one side.
Today we watched some videos by Tom Richey on Romanticism and Romantic art.
Students are to find a Romantic poem or artwork and next time read/show it to us and tell us what the Romantic elements of the work are. Today we read and then listened to a podcast on ambition and the human brain. We took notes using the "What" style note-taking strategy. (attached below)
We discussed the article from last time in groups and as a class. Then we had a think with ink on ambition. (attached below)
Today we learned how to annotate and then we annotated an article on types of attention.
Today was commercial day. We analyzed commercials in class for audience, different appeals, and lifestyles. For homework, you must analyze 10 commercials using the handout. (attached below)
Today we read our own books for 15 minutes.
Then we went over the possible book projects that we will choose from for our reading book. We then filled out an assessment at humanmetrics.com and found our 4 letter personality type. We then read the information on that type and planned a way to do a homework assignment for another class. We learned the true plot line from Captain Rice. Then each student plotted a story that they know using the true plot line structure.
Then students completed the Myers-Briggs assessment to find out how to do stuff more gooder. "The Homework Challenge" (attached below) goes with the results of the assessment. This assignment is due September 5th.
Today we analyzed 4 texts for their Purpose, Presentation, Role, and Evidence. (attached below) Then we learned how to write paragraphs and focused on topic sentences. (attached below) Make sure that you underline/circle all topic sentences in paragraphs for the rest of the semester.
We finished getting to know each other before filling out a Literacy Inventory. (attached below) Then we discussed the 5 learning domains of Language Arts and the elusive symbolism behind language. We ended by summarizing a song's lyrics. "Loser" by Beck. (attached below)
Today we introduced ourselves after going over the disclosure document.
